History of the Clarinet

The forerunner of today's clarinet was the Chalumeau, a small wooden instrument with nine finger holes, and a built-in reed. It had a limited range, with a mellow, low tone. It evolved into today's clarinet which retained the deep, low register (called the Chalumeau register) and added a brilliant upper register. The modern clarinet evolved from just a few keys and a complicated fingering system into today's Boehm system around 1840. The clarinet began to be popularized by Mozart prior to the nineteenth century. Beethoven and Brahms favored the instrument later, with its use increasing in the twentieth century.
